How can I avoid having a prospective employer contact a former employer for reference?
At the place I used to work for, the receptionist was extremely jealous of me, and really seemed to **** me. My boss would likely give a professional, fair reference, but a prospective employer would never get past the receptionist. What can I do if said receptionist does give a bad character reference for me? She is not beyond lying to cause me grief, in fact, that is why I no longer work there, because she caused me so much anxiety and stress. I live in Michigan, and from what I have found on the internet, employers can say whatever they want about me. But I think I can sue if what they say results in me not being hired. Assuming a prospective employer would not find a need to tell me about the poor reference, how do I protect myself and my reputation? Also, who would I go to for a lawsuit in such a case? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
